Drywall and plaster repair in Los Angeles

A doorknob hole in drywall and a crack in 1920s plaster are different repairs, and the photo shows us which one you have. The price comes back by text within the hour.

The texts we get about walls

  • A crack running up from the corner of a door frame.
  • A dent where the doorknob swings into the wall.
  • Holes a TV mount left when it came down.
  • Tape bubbling along a seam in the ceiling.
  • A brown ring on the ceiling under the bathroom.
  • Plaster that sounds hollow when you knock on it.

Plaster or drywall

Knock on the wall. If it sounds hollow and flexes a touch, it's drywall. If your knuckles meet something dense and quiet, it's plaster, and a lot of LA houses built before the war have it, laid over thin strips of wood lath. Postwar houses and many apartments have drywall.

Drywall is the quicker repair. A small hole gets mesh and compound, and a big one gets a new square of board, screwed to wood we set inside the wall behind it. Plaster takes longer. A crack over a door often means the plaster beside it has come loose from the lath, so we fix it back to the lath before anything gets filled, or the same crack comes back.

Then the part you'll see. We match the texture on your wall, sprayed or smooth, and prime the patch so the paint doesn't dry dull over it.

The number in the text is the number

If what we find at the door isn't what the photo showed, you hear it right there, before any work. Nothing changes without your OK.

Water stains

A stain means water got there first. A dry, old one gets sealed with a stain-blocking primer so it doesn't bleed through the new paint. If it's still damp, the leak has to stop before the wall or ceiling is closed up, and that part is often a plumber's or a roofer's. The reply says so.

How a repair goes

  1. Send the photo. One from far enough back to show the whole wall, and one close up. Say whether you still have the paint.
  2. We text back the price, or one question. Within the hour, 7am to 7pm. The question is often whether the wall is plaster or drywall.
  3. Pick a morning or an afternoon. We confirm the visit by text. If a deep patch needs a night to dry before the texture goes on, the reply says so up front.
  4. At the door. Shoe covers go on before we step inside, and a cloth goes down under the work. Then we read the price from your text back to you, so we both start from the same number.
  5. The patch, then the texture. Primer goes on before any paint, and the paint goes on too if you've kept some from the last time the room was done.
  6. We look along the wall before we go. A patch can hide face on and show in light that skims across it, so that's how we check it. The dust goes in our bag, and the invoice lands in the thread with your price.

What moves the price of a wall repair

  • The wall. Old plaster takes longer to work in than drywall, and the price says so.
  • The size and the finish. A big hole needs new board behind it, and a smooth plaster finish shows every edge.
  • The paint. A touch-up from your can, or the wall repainted out to its corners when the old paint has faded past matching.
  • A ceiling. Working overhead takes longer, and a high one needs a ladder.

Several patches in one message come back priced together, for one visit.

What you get

  • A patch fixed to the wall behind it, in the same texture as the rest of the wall.
  • Any second visit for drying named in the price, before you book.
  • A year on our workmanship. If something we did starts acting up, text us a picture of it. We book the trip back from that photo, and that visit is free.

Drywall and plaster, asked by text

Can you price a crack from a photo?

Usually. If we can't tell from the picture whether the plaster has let go of the lath, the reply asks you to press the wall beside the crack and tell us if it moves.

Will the crack come back?

Old plaster moves with the house, and LA houses move. Fixing the plaster back to the lath first gives the repair its best chance of staying put.

Do you paint the whole wall?

Only when a patch painted on its own would show. Paint that has been on a wall for years changes color, so a fresh square of it stands out, and the reply says so before you book.

Point your phone at it. We'll text back a price within the hour.
